More details on the upcoming Godzilla 2 are now available, including the full cast and a synopsis of the sequel.
According to a report by Collider, the film previously referred to as Godzilla: King of the Monsters is currently only Godzilla 2. This will be the follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 film Godzilla and a part of the Warner Bros./Legendary Monsterverse.
Michael Dougherty (Krampus) will be directing a screenplay he co-wrote with Zach Shields (Krampus.) The film will include returning cast members Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins along with Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Zhang Ziyi (Hero), Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr, and Aisha Hinds.
Here is the official synopsis of the film:
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
As previously reported, the Monsterverse is a cinematic universe and film series that is distributed by Warner Bros., and produced by Legendary Entertainment, in partnership with Toho. The first installment of the series was 2014’s Godzilla (also starring Ken Watanabe) with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkings, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston. Earlier this year the second installment of the monster verse, Kong: Skull Island, was released, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly, and featured King Kong. The two monsters of these films will be facing each other in an epic showdown in Godzilla vs. Kong set for 2020.
Godzilla 2 will hit theaters on March 22, 2019.
