ITV’s new drama ‘The Loch’ might be new ‘Broadchurch’

The LochITV is launching a new detective drama, The Loch, focusing on a grisly crime committed in a gorgeous location, something that might fill the Broadchurch-shaped hole in our television schedules.

According to a report by Digital Spy, The Loch stars Laura Fraser (The Missing, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) as local cop Annie Redford and she is joined Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley, Downton Abbey), who plays her no-nonsense partner.

Siobhan Finneran talked to Digital Spy about the show, “I’ve kind’ve been blown away by how beautiful it looked…I saw a lot of grey, wet Scotland, and they’ve managed to shoot footage of an incredibly beautiful, serene Scotland. I didn’t see a great amount of that, I have to say!” She also addressed the gruesome scenes of the show, which tackles the case of a serial killer on the loose, “I’m not really very squeamish – though, some of the things were quite grim. Sometimes, you’re sitting in the make-up room next to somebody who’s being made up to look like they’ve been bludgeoned to death… or you’re sitting opposite somebody at lunch who’s got half their head missing!”

The series will focus on one case for its entire six-episode run. Finneran believes that the show might inspire a lot of speculation and will keep audiences guessing. “Everybody, probably, in that first episode looks suspicious of doing something – all of us!…So yeah, it should keep people guessing, definitely.”

Two lead detectives, a horrific crime in a lovely location, one case for a whole season – similar elements to Broadchurch, but I still think The Loch will be its own creature and should not be constantly compared to its predecessor. British crime dramas are always done well and with such a talented cast and a beautiful location, I believe that this show might be another stellar addition to the genre.

The Loch begins Sunday, May 18 on ITV.
