Watch the trailer for John Cena’s Ferdinand

FerdinandPro-wrestling legend John Cena takes on a different role, as Ferdinand, the kind-hearted bull, in this new animated film.

“People think they got you all figured out based on how you look,” Cena says in the trailer, “But it’s not that simple, especially when it comes to me. I’m a little more…complex.”

Ferdinand is based on the story by American author Munro Leaf about a bull who prefers smelling the flowers instead of bull fighting. But after a big misunderstanding, he ends up being thrown into the ring to face the most famous bullfighters in the land. The story was previously adapted into a Disney animated short entitled Ferdinand the Bull back in 1938 and it went on to win the 1938 Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Cartoons).

The trailer shows Ferdinand struggling with his strange situation while meeting many new friends (and enemies), both human and animal, including three lively hedgehogs named Una, Dos, and Cuatro (they never speak of Tres), a sarcastic goat, and three arrogant horses.

Ed Sheeran’s Castle on the Hill plays in the background as the gentle bull makes his journey back home.

Ferdinand boasts of all-star cast which includes Kate McKinnon, Gina Rodriguez, Daveed Diggs, Gabriel Iglesias, Bobby Cannavale, David Tennant, Anthony Anderson, Flula Borg, Sally Phillips, Boris Kodjoe, Jerrod Carmichael, Raúl Esparza, Karla Martínez, and Miguel Ángel Silvestre.

FerdinandHere is the official synopsis of the film:

FERDINAND tells the story of a giant bull with a big heart. After being mistaken for a dangerous beast, he is captured and torn from his home. Determined to return to his family, he rallies a misfit team on the ultimate adventure. Set in Spain, Ferdinand proves you can’t judge a bull by its cover.

From Blue Sky Studios and Carlos Saldanha, the director of Rio and inspired by the beloved book The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson, Ferdinand is a heartwarming animated comedy adventure with an all-star cast that includes John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Gina Rodriguez, Anthony Anderson and many more.”

Ferdinand  opens on December 15, 2017.
