Zhang Ziyi joins Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi joins the Warner Bros./Legendary Monsterverse as a cast member for the upcoming sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

AccZhang Ziyi joins Godzilla: King of the Monstersording to a report on Empire online, Zhang (well known for her work on films like House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero, Memoirs of a Geisha) will be playing a “significant figure within the secretive scientific Monarch organization,” as first established in the 2014 Godzilla movie, and then continued in Kong: Skull Island. No other details have been revealed about her character but she will also be recurring in 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong.

She is the latest to join the cast that already includes Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, and Ken Watanabe. Michael Dougherty will be directing using a script he wrote with Zach Shields. Not much has been revealed so far about the plot of this upcoming sequel.

The Monsterverse is a cinematic universe and film series that is distributed by Warner Bros. and produced by Legendary Entertainment in partnership with Toho. The first installment of the series was 2014’s Godzilla (also starring Ken Watanabe) with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkings, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston. Earlier this year the second installment of the monster verse, Kong: Skull Island, was released, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly and featuring King Kong. The two monsters of these films will be facing each other in an epic showdown in Godzilla vs. Kong set for 2020.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be released on March 22, 2019.
