Casting news for DCTV’s upcoming season keep trickling in, as we previously learned that Odette Annable will play Supergirl‘s villain and The Flash is currently casting a big bad named The Thinker. Now TVLine has just reported that Legends of Tomorrow added a new face to its roster: Tala Ashe (Smash, As the World Turns) joins the team as Zari Adrianna Tomaz.

Adrianna’s transformation into Isis in 52 Vol 1.
Adrianna Tomaz is a bit of an obscure character in DC lore, hailing from Egypt before being sent to Kahndaq as a gift for Black Adam. The ruler frees her and, impressed with her outspokenness and ideas for his country’s improvement, imbues her with the powers of Isis through the help of an ancient amulet.
As for her role on Legends of Tomorrow, Zari is described as a Muslim-American woman from the year 2030 with extensive computer knowledge and a sardonic attitude. As the casting information for her tells us, “Zari lives in a world of contradictions. Technology has brought about incredible change in her future — too bad human nature hasn’t kept pace. Fear, prejudice, and a lack of care for the planet have forced Zari to become a ‘grey hat hacktivist.’”
It’s unclear from this description whether Tala Ashe will be a regular on the show or not, but we can assume she has a pretty sizable role if the announcement came this early. It’s incredibly important to have positive representation of Muslims onscreen in today’s day and age, and it looks like Legends of Tomorrow once again won’t shy away from discussing prejudice in our society.
Will Zari transform herself into Isis onscreen, or will her skills as a computer hacktivist carry the team to some important victory instead? Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing her interact with both Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) and Amaya Jiwe (Maisie Richardson-Sellers). We can never have too many lady friendships… And a romance for Sara isn’t out of the question, either!
