FOX has officially announced a return of The X-Files, expected to air this coming fall.
EW reports that fans can expect ten more episodes of the show, which will star Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as FBI Agents Scully and Mulder. Chris Carter will return as the show’s executive producer, as well.
David Madden, president of FOX, had this to say about the revival:
Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.
During the winter TCA press tour, Madden had already been positive about bringing back more of the show. And the renewal makes monetary sense, as well, considering that season 10 was the second-highest rated broadcast drama of last season.
The two co-stars, meanwhile, each tweeted their excitement about the announcement.
Personally, as a committed X-Phile, I will be watching. However, I know I’m not alone in worrying that if Chris Carter does most of the writing, as he did for the recent six-episode run, these new episodes may suffer from more of the same incoherent and confusing writing. Hopefully Darin Morgan can be convinced to write one among the ten, as his “Mulder And Scully Meet The Were-Monster” was a highlight among the rest of season 10. And maybe some other guest writers can join in, as well.
Either way, I need to know what our favorite paranormal investigators will be up to – and I want to believe it will be fascinating, creepy, funny, and emotional, like my best memories of The X-Files.
