Live-action Mulan not going to be a musical

MulanThe director of the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Disney’s Mulan confirmed that it will not have any songs.

The film’s director, Niki Caro, confirmed in an interview with Moviefone, that the film will not be featuring any musical numbers, a break from the Disney tradition. She said:

“From what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.”

Mulan, the 1998 classic animated Disney film, chronicled the adventures of a courageous young Chinese woman who disguises herself as a man and joins the army in order to save her father. Her journey helps her learn more about herself, as well as single-handedly defeat the Hun army that has invaded her country. She returns home a hero.

Caro describes this film as:

“a big, girly martial arts epic. It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving.”

So far, no news has been released on who will be playing the title role but last year Disney put out a casting call for Chinese actors between 18 to 20 years old. According to the Guardian, this casting call came after a petition for the studio to avoid “whitewashing” (casting a white actor in the role of a person of color) attracted more than 20,000 signatures.

The animated film featured some beloved songs such as “Reflection” and “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.” So it looks like we won’t be getting new versions of these songs.  Mulan is just the latest Disney film to be adapted into a live-action version, following the successes of Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Maleficent, and Cinderella. Other projects in the works include a sequel to Mary Poppins.

As previously reported, the live-action version of Mulan is set to be released on November 2, 2018.
