Ed Sheeran to guest star on Game of Thrones

The British singer-songwriter will be appearing in a cameo on the seventh season of Game of Thrones.

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss made the announcement during an event at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, according to a report by the Guardian.

Ed Sheeran himself seemingly confirmed the news by sharing a link on Twitter with a picture of him with Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams, who is apparently a huge fan of his.

During a panel, Benioff and Weiss talked about how they got the idea to cast Sheeran because they knew how much Williams loved his work. They said, “For years, we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie, and this year we finally did it.”

No further details were revealed about Sheeran’s role on the show. Other musicians have made appearances on Game of Thrones over the years including Coldplay’s Will Champion, Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Animal Circus’s Joel Fry, and members of the band Mastodon.

The seventh season is the penultimate season of the epic saga and will only have seven episodes as opposed to the usual ten. And the eighth and last season is reported to only have six episodes.

Game of Thrones season seven will premiere on July 16 on HBO.
