New ‘Doctor Who’ Teaser gives peak at new companion

BBC America have given us a glimpse at the upcoming new season of Doctor Who, and the personality of the latest series companion, Bill (Pearl Mackie).

There’s not a lot to it, as it really is just a teaser, but new companion! New blood is a good thing, right?

To be honest, I remember a time when this might have thrilled me. Now this has been out for days and well, I didn’t really care. Remember when Doctor Who was cool? I miss those days.

As someone who is a huge fan of both showrunner Steven Moffat, and The Doctor actor himself, Peter Capaldi, it’s still hard to admit that the last few years have been a major letdown, and I’m anxiously awaiting a change of pace when both Moffat and Capaldi exit the series after Season 10 (sadly, I must admit I’m hoping for an entirely new series, with a new companion too – sorry, Bill).

True, Chris Chibnall, who will be taking over the series on Moffat’s exit, isn’t a sure thing. His Broadchurch (which returns for its final series tonight in the UK on ITV) is one of the best dramas of the last 10 years, in my humble opinion, and his run on Torchwood was enjoyable, but his individual episodes of Doctor Who have been passable at best. Then again, Moffat wrote many of the best episodes of the first 4 series after Doctor Who returned, and then was a disappointing showrunner, so anything is possible.

The one thing I believe most Doctor Who fans can agree on is that with the series flagging ratings, and the increasing number of people questioning whether or not it might be time for another break for the series, a new infusion of blood can hardly hurt the show at this point.

Doctor Who returns for Season 10 on BBC One and BBC America on Saturday, April 15th.
