We were invited to meet the cast and preview some songs recently and can wholeheartedly recommend The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical as a family-friendly treat even non-fans will appreciate. The cast is full of strong voices and personalities – even in a rehearsal room, you could feel the energy of the performances. We can’t wait to see the full vision with costumes, sets (we caught a peek at some of the sketches and models – amazing!), and an orchestra.
Percy Jackson – a kid who feels rootless and alone much of the time – has discovered the shocking truth: he’s a demigod, monsters are chasing him, and he needs to prevent a war between the Greek gods. Not what he was expecting when he woke up that morning…
There are some upsides as he’s making friends and finding a purpose for his life, but it’s hard to appreciate that when you’re charged with finding Zeus’ lightning bolt and everyone seems to be trying to kill you. A great blend of “real teen” feelings and the supernatural, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical features an emotional score and lots of action in a story that will resonate with all ages.
The cast includes Chris McCarrell (Les Misérables) as Percy Jackson, Jelani Alladin (Regional: Choir Boy, San Fran Critics Award) as Luke, Carrie Compere (Broadway: The Color Purple, Holler If Ya Hear Me) as Sally, Sarah Beth Pfeifer (Nat’l tour: Legally Blonde: The Musical) as Clarisse, Jonathan Raviv (The Band’s Visit) as Brunner, George Salazar (Broadway: Godspell, Nat’l tour: Spring Awakening) as Grover, and Kristin Stokes (NY: Fly by Night, Regional: Diary of a Wimpy Kid) as Annabeth.
The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is written by Joe Tracz (Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Rob Rokicki (Strange Tails), directed by Stephen Brackett (Buyer and Cellar), choreography by Patrick McCollum (The Band’s Visit) with musical direction by Wiley DeWeese (The Wildness), orchestrations by Wiley DeWeese & Rob Rokicki, and fight direction by Rod Kinter (More Than All the World). The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical creative team includes Lee Savage (Set Design), Sydney Maresca (Costume Design), Ryan Rumery (Sound Design), David Lander (Lighting Design), Jason Blitman & Greg Uliasz (Casting). It is being presented by Theatreworks NYC in arrangement with Rick Riordan and the Gallt & Zacker Literary Agency.

I am SO excited for this! I would love to go & see it performed…if only I lived in New York. :/
(I may have recently had that “Good Kid” song on repeat over the last couple of days).
