Marvel Announces All-New ‘Defenders’ Ongoing

With Marvel Studios’ upcoming Netflix series slowly approaching, Marvel has decided to launch an all-new Defenders ongoing comic series. Like the upcoming show the comic will feature Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Iron Fist teaming up together. The series will be written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by David Marquez and colors by Justin Ponsor.

Bendis serves as a solid choice for this upcoming series, having written stories revolving around these characters for years. Not only has he written an extensive run on Daredevil, but he is also known for creating the character of Jessica Jones, introducing her in the hit Marvel series Alias.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bendis did not hesitate to point out the reason behind debuting a new Defenders series close to the premiere of its onscreen counterpart. Here’s what he had to say:

There are a lot of fans who will say, ‘Oh they’re doing a TV show, so of course there’s going to be a comic,’ but at least in this case, there’s a comic I can point you to. Read the last two pages of Brian’s New Avengers! Certainly that there is a big new exciting Netflix TV show coming is a good excuse for us to get to that story that we planted the seed on.

A special preview of Defenders will be released on May 6, Free Comic Book Day. Defenders #1 will make its way to store shelves and digital platforms this June.
