Despite some less than stellar reviews, the David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad did well in theaters amongst general audiences, earning $745.6 million globally and scoring a fair 65% audience aproval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Keeping this in mind, Warner Bros. has decided to move forward with a Gotham City Sirens spin-off film directed by Ayer and starring Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn.

Inspired by the comic of the same name, Gotham City Sirens was a DC Comics ongoing series that debuted in 2009 which focused on the female villains of Gotham City: Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy. Along with several other DC titles, Sirens was cancelled in 2011 to make way for the publisher’s New 52 restructuring that year.

In addition to Ayer and Robbie being attached to the upcoming project, Geneva Robertson-Dworet is set to write the film’s screenplay. Currently, Robertson-Dworet is also attached to pen Guy Ritchie’s third Shelock Holmes film and an upcoming film adaptation of the video game Tomb Raider. Geoff Johns and Jon Berg will continue to serve as producers.

As for whether or not Catwoman and Poison Ivy will appear in the film, that information has yet to be revealed, as well as when it will take place in Warner Bros. line-up of DC films. The film’s story will most likely take place directly following the events of Suicide Squad (Spoiler Alert) after Harley Quinn is broken out of jail by The Joker. We’ll keep you posted on Gotham City Sirens as more updates come through. In the mean time feel free to let us know what you think of this upcoming project. Are you fan of Suicide Squad and look forward to see its Ayer and Robbie give Harley Quinn another go? Or have you lost faith in the Warner Bros. DC extended universe altogether?
