Taking the reins away from future Aquaman director James Wan, the eighth installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise is directed by Straight Outta Compton‘s F. Gary Gray. This latest addition, entitled The Fate of the Furious (and surprisingly not The F8 of the Furious), stars returning cast members Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jason Statham, and Kurt Russell, and newcomers Helen Mirren, Scott Eastwood, and Charlize Theron.
Before the release of the following trailer for The Fate of the Furious, it was revealed that Charlize Theron would play the movie’s main antagonist and would have a relation to the franchise’s previous two antagonists Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) in Fast & Furious 6 and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) in Furious 7. Although, unlike its predecessors, F8 will change things up by turning Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto into an antagonist himself who goes against his own family.
Judging from the trailer it seems Toretto is only working with Charlize Theron’s Cipher under duress, but this doesn’t make the twist any less ridiculous. Having said that, the upcoming movie seems like it will satisfy on the action side of things providing plenty of fast cars, explosions, and even a scene involving our heroes racing away from a giant submarine. Check out the trailer.
The Fate of the Furious is currently set to release in U.S. theaters April 14, 2017.
