New Trailer Released for Danny Boyle’s ‘Trainspotting’ Sequel

The first full trailer for T2: Trainspotting 2 has been officially released online. Directed by returning director Danny Boyle with a screenplay by returning writer John Hodge, Trainspotting 2 reunites members of its predecessor’s original cast including Ewan McGregor, Johnny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremmer, Robert Carlyle, and Kelly Macdonald. Based on the novel Porno, the sequel to the original Trainspotting novel by Irvine Welsh, T2 sees McGregor’s Renton, Miller’s Sick Boy, Bremmer’s Spud, and Carlyle’s Begbie reunite after 20 years, though it’s unclear how much of the film will follow its original source material which sees the characters reunite after 9 years and get into the pornography business.

Since Trainspotting‘s initial release in 1996, director Danny Boyle has made a slew of hit movies and academy award nominated films including 28 Days Later, Slumdog Millionaire, Sunshine127 Hours, and most recently, 2015’s Steve Jobs starring Michael Fassbender, just to name a few. In those 20 years both Danny Boyle and the film’s cast have grown exponentially within their respective fields, and hopefully this upcoming sequel will serve as a proper reunion and/or send off for these characters introduced so long ago.

Played to the tune of “Born Slippy” by Underworld followed by “Silk” by Wolf Alice, the overall tone of this first trailer comes off as somewhat positive and uplifting, but also hints that these characters will go down similar downward spirals as they did in the first film. T2: Trainspotting 2 releases in UK theaters January 27, 2017, U.S. theaters February 3, and worldwide February 10.
