A Game of Thrones / Westworld Crossover may not be improbable

game-of-thrones-westworldA crossover between HBO’s biggest shows, fantasy epic Game of Thrones and sci-fi drama Westworld, may not be such a distant possibility.

Fans have been clamoring for such an intriguing mix of their favorite shows. And considering how the original 1973 Westworld film also featured other themed parks including Roman World and Medieval World, there is a chance that such a park could be created and populated with all of our favorite characters from Game of Thrones, alive or otherwise. And the themes of violence, power, and destruction are common to both shows.

As it turns out, fans are not the only ones excited about a potential crossover. Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin apparently expressed his enthusiasm about this to the showrunners of Westworld, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. According to an article from Entertainment Weekly, this was their reaction. Jonathan Nolan said:

We love George and our daughter’s first trip anywhere in the world was out to Santa Fe for a screening of The Prestige at his theater, the Jean Cocteau…He’s a lovely guy and a stunning writer and it’s flattering he would encourage a crossover. We should be so lucky.

Lisa Joy had a minor objection to the project, saying:

I need to be believe that dragons are real…I want them be a real thing. So as much as I love George, I can’t lose that for myself!

But with only the first season of Westworld on the air, there is still a great deal to be explored in the Western theme. Nolan said:

We’ve got an awful lot of material to cover just with Westworld, but you want to stay tuned…

So while the idea of the crossover dangled in front of us for a tantalizing moment, it might not happen anytime soon. But who knows?

Westworld season one is currently airing every Sunday on HBO. Season seven of Game of Thrones will premiere next summer.
