20th Century Fox has released the first official trailer for Logan, the third solo Wolverine film within the X-Men franchise. Directed by James Mangold (The Wolverine), the film stars returning actor Hugh Jackman in the titular role, making this the ninth time he’s played the character on the big screen. The film also sees the return of Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and stars Sienna Novikov and Boyd Holbrook among others.
Set in the year 2024, Logan sees Wolverine and Professor X cope with the loss of the X-Men while simultaneously trying to deal with an evil corporation known as Transigen. One of Transigen’s main goals is to turn mutant children into weapons, which leads Wolverine and Professor X to protecting a young Laura Kinney/X-23 (Novikov), a female clone of Wolverine. Additionally, Wolverine’s healing abilities are beginning to fade as is Professor X’s mind.
Played to the tune of “Hurt” by Johnny Cash, the trailer for Logan is very grounded and somber. Something that doesn’t quite make sense is the time in which this story takes place. The events of X-Men: Days of Future Past seemingly take place one year prior to the events of Logan, yet by the end of that story everything seemed to to be fine. How can everything go so wrong in only a year? Surely the film will address this, but until then check out the trailer for Logan below and feel free to let us know what you think in the comments.
Logan releases in theaters March 3, 2017.
