Sherlock may really be ending, says Cumberbatch

sherlock-and-watsonThe star himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, has recently admitted that the fourth season of the BBC modern adaptation may truly be its last, news that has undoubtedly upset Sherlock fans everywhere.

According to a report by Variety, Cumberbatch told GQ UK that his adventures as the incomparable consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes, may be coming to an end in the upcoming season. He said:

“It might be the end of an era. It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately…We never say never on the show. I’d love to revisit it, I’d love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we’ve made something very complete as it is, so I think we’ll just wait and see.”

He also added that the prospect of never playing the character again was “galling.”

As devastating as this news may be for all the devoted Sherlockians, this is not the first we’ve heard of the season being the last. Earlier this year, showrunner Steven Moffat also admitted this much, attributing this decision to the difficulty of putting the show together as the cast and crew have grown more famous and therefore, very, very busy.

Sherlock has been on air since 2010, with three seasons and a Christmas special “The Abominable Bride.” The acclaimed series has been nominated for 34 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning seven of them, including those for Outstanding Made for Television Movie and Outstanding Cast for a Limited Series, Movie, Or Special.

The first two episode titles of Sherlock season four have been recently released and the hype for this season continues to grow. If this will indeed be the final season of Sherlock, it looks like it will definitely end on a high note. But hopefully, this isn’t the last we will see of this iteration of the world-famous consulting detective.

Don’t miss Sherlock season 4, coming out in 2017 on BBC One.
