Pacific Rim 2 casts Cailee Spaeny, Levi Meaden

Two new cast members, Cailee Spaeny and Levi Meaden, have been added to the upcoming sci-fi film Pacific Rim 2.

According to a report by Variety, actress and singer Cailee Spaeny has been cast as the female lead in the sequel to the 2013 sci-fi hit Pacific Rim. It was previously announced that John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) would play the male lead, specifically the role of the son of Stacker Pentecost, Idris Elba’s character from the first film.

Variety has also revealed other cast members of the sequel including Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, and most recently, Levi Meaden (Aftermath, The Killing). Meaden will be playing Ilya, described as “an irreverent and offbeat cadet.”

Pacific Rim explored a world constantly attacked by huge monsters called kaiju who emerged from a portal in the Pacific Ocean. These could only be defeated by giant dual pilot-operated mecha called jaegers.

Not a lot of plot details have been revealed about the film so far. Pacific Rim 2 will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Daredevil) and produced by Guillermo del Toro (who directed the first film), Jon Jashni, Femi Oguns, Mary Parent, and Thomas Tull.

As previously announced, Pacific Rim 2 is set to be released on February 23, 2018.
