Marvel Boss Discusses Real World Connections Of ‘Luke Cage’

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first show led by an African-American character, Marvel’s Luke Cage could be expected to have something important to say about current events. Head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb says those expectations will rewarded. Comicbook.com reports that Loeb spoke at SDCC this year and pointed out,

You can’t set out to do Luke Cage and not deal with the reality of what’s going on in this country, and what’s going on in general. It’s not what the show’s about, but if we can get our message out, which is, ‘This is all one planet, and we’re going to have [to] figure it out’ […] Marvel always works best when it lives in the real world, but then has the Marvel touch around it.

It sounds like we can expect story lines dealing with issues of racial tension similar to what’s going on in the real world, which should flow from the fascinating, action-packed, and super-powered tales we’ve come to expect from Marvel. That’s how I felt while watching Jessica Jones (another Marvel Netflix offering), which dealt with issues of consent, abuse, and rape with the focus on telling a very compelling and entertaining story.

Luke Cage will be available to stream on Netflix starting September 30. Are you excited? Let us know in the comments.
