New details revealed for ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

Thanks to the Television Critics Association’s (TCA) Summer Press Tour, we finally know a few more details about what to expect from the upcoming Star Trek Series from Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies), Star Trek: Discovery.

Little has been revealed up until this point, but it looks like CBS and Bryan Fuller have been holding out for the TCA’s. Here are some of the highlights:

  • The series will take place some 10 years before the original Star Trek series, and it will take place in the “Prime” Universe (aka, not the new universe that began with J.J. Abrams Star Trek film)
  • It will center around a major event in Star Trek lore, though they’re not telling us what that is. Thanks to questions from the reporters present we do know it’s not about either the Romulan Wars (which actually took place 100 years before TOS, oops), or Black Ops Section 31 (though that one may come up)
  • The series will be lead by a female lead, who is not the Captain, but a Lieutenant Commander. Sounds like after 6 series with the Captain at the lead, Fuller has decided we’ve ‘Been there, done that’. Does this mean we’re going below decks? Downton Abbey in Space, perhaps? We can only hope.
  • The show will be serialized, but each episode will also have a story that concludes with the end of the episode.
  • The cast will be very diverse, and the characters themselves will be more diverse, with more aliens rounding out the cast than in previous Star Trek series.
  • As the series will be on CBS’ all new pay platform, CBS All Access, the series will be able to have more sexual content. “There’s a reason we call it ‘STD'”, quipped Fuller. “That’s not a nebula you’re flying through, it’s cloudy discharge.” O.o
  • There will absolutely be a gay character.
  • Amanda Grayson, aka Spock’s mom, might make an appearance. Though she won’t be a central character.
  • Other known characters may appear, but the first season will be dedicated to new characters.

Star Trek: Discovery is due to hit CBS All Access in January 2017.
