‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Gains Ghost Rider for Season 4

More big news coming out of SDCC: a formidable new but very familiar character is joining the ranks of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when it returns for its fourth season.

As executive producer and Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb said:

Season 4 will unquestionably be the series’ biggest, most ambitious story yet, and it all begins with the introduction of one of our greatest legacy characters in Ghost Rider. When the Spirit of Vengeance rides into S.H.I.E.L.D., it’ll change everything.

This Ghost Rider will be Robbie Reyes (not Johnny Blaze), the new Rider introduced in the 2014 Marvel NOW! comics. According to Variety, Reyes – who will be portrayed by Gabriel Luna, of True Detective fame – becomes the Ghost Rider in the comics after being shot to death in the street and then revived by the ghost of a Satanic serial killer, who turns out to be his uncle. The comic book version is also a high schooler who takes care of his developmentally disabled brother Gabe.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns this September 20 on ABC, at its new timeslot of 10pm.
