Game of Thrones leads Emmy Nominations 2016

The full list of nominees for this year’s television Emmy Awards has just been announced, with Game of Thrones in the lead with 22 nominations, followed by the fantastic The People v. O.J. Simpson.

Game of Thrones, S6 Ep9 - Battle of the BastardsGame of Thrones reigned supreme during the Emmy nominations, bagging 23 (one less than last year) for its sixth season, including Best Drama, and several nominations in acting categories for Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams.

The miniseries chronicling the trial of O.J. Simpson, The People v. O.J. Simpson, gained 22 nominations which, according to the Guardian, makes it the first series since the 90s to earn more than 20 nominations in its first season. These include Best Miniseries and acting nominations for Courtney B. Vance, Cuba Gooding Jr., Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown, John Travolta, and David Schwimmer.

Rami Malek Mr Robot Emmy nomineeThe first season of the thrilling and critically-acclaimed drama Mr. Robot also received well-deserved recognition, with nominations for Best Drama and Best Actor for its stark, Rami Malek. Another new show that was recognized was Aziz Ansari’s Netflix comedy, Master of None.

Some ongoing shows were finally given recognition this year, notably the 80s-era spy drama The Americans, with five nominations, including Best Drama and noms in acting categories for its two leads, Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell. The other nominees for Best Drama are Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey, Homeland, and House of Cards.

The fun and insightful comedy, Black-ish, about the life of an African-American family, was also recognized for its second season, including acting nominations for its leads Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross. The other nominees for Best Comedy are Modern Family, Silicon Valley, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Veep (last year’s winner).

This year’s Emmy nominations were not without some notable snubs, including the last season of legal drama The Good Wife and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

The People v OJ Simpson cuba gooding jr courtney b vanceBut there was a greater sense of diversity in the list of Emmy nominations, with well-deserved recognition going to many outstanding performances by non-white actors for shows like The People v OJ Simpson, Empire, How to Get Away with Murder, Black-ish, Master of None, and Mr. Robot. A total of 18 actors of color received Emmy nominations across 16 acting categories.

The other programs that received multiple nominations were Fargo (18), Veep (17), and Saturday Night Live (16). The network that received the most nominations this year was once again HBO (94), though this was less than the 126 it received last year.
