Wicked movie coming in 2019

Wicked Idina MenzelThe long-awaited film adaptation of the Broadway smash hit, Wicked, has just gotten a release date, according to a report by IGN.

Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, is a musical adapted from the novel by Gregory Maguire entitled Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, that focuses on the back story of the Wicked Witch of Oz, an iconic character from L. Frank Baum’s classic novels. The musical opened in 2003 and since then has enjoyed massive success and popularity. The music and lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Prince of Egypt, Enchanted).

Wicked chronicles various events before the arrival of Dorothy Gale in Oz and focuses on the lives of Elphaba (the Witch of the West) and Glinda (eventually the Good Witch), two very different witches who form an unlikely friendship through many trials, including being in love with the same person, dealing with the corruption of the Wizard’s government, and Elphaba’s public fall from grace and transformation into the eponymous witch.

The musical’s original cast included Idina Menzel (Frozen) as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth (Strange Magic) as Glinda, and Joel Grey (Cabaret) as the Wizard. The original Broadway production won three Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Awards. The show was also the origin of hit songs like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular”.

The screenplay will be written by Schwartz and Winnie Holtzman, while Stephen Daldry (The Hours, Billy Elliot) will be directing. The film adaptation was first announced back in 2008 and it has been in development ever since. While fans still have a few years to wait before their favorite musical hits the big screen, at least there’s now a definite date to wait for.

Watch out for Wicked on December 20, 2019.
