New Game of Thrones photos from epic battle

Game of Thrones, S6 Ep9 - Battle of the BastardsHBO has released promotional photos for the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones season 6, called “Battle of the Bastards.”

As previously reported, this season of Game of Thrones is supposedly the biggest yet and will contain the most epic battle scene the show has ever done. It’s clear that this will be the decisive battle for the North. The whole season so far has built up to this massive conflict, with Jon and Sansa rallying for support from the Houses of the North who had pledged their loyalty to the Starks, and with Ramsay Bolton preparing his forces to defend Winterfell and to reclaim his bride.

The ninth episode of a Game of Thrones season usually features a major fight or a great turning point in the story such as season 1’s “Baelor” (Ned’s death), season 2’s “Blackwater” (battle of Blackwater Bay), and of course, season 3’s “The Rains of Castamere” (a.k.a. the infamous Red Wedding). From the looks of it, “Battle of the Bastards” will be following the same tradition.

Game of Thrones, S6 Ep9 - Battle of the BastardsWithout the budget restraints that had kept previous battle scenes more subdued and simple, this season’s conflict looks like it will be a proper, feature-film style epic battle scene, with elaborate practical effects, thousands of extras, and breathtaking duels.

According to a report by IGN, the promotional photos for the episode feature the main players in this war, Jon Snow and Sansa Stark, riding to reclaim their ancestral home and to save their youngest brother from the clutches of Ramsay Bolton. The Starks’ allies include the Wildling army who pledged their loyalty to Jon, particularly Tormund and the giant Wun Wun. They are also joined by Ser Davos Seaworth, formerly a knight loyal to the late Stannis Baratheon. He was instrumental in bringing about Jon’s resurrection.

Game of Thrones, S6 Ep9 - Battle of the BastardsThe teaser for the episode shows both sides gearing up for the big clash.

“Battles have been won against greater odds,” Jon Snow says gravely, “I’ve fought beyond the Wall against worse than Ramsay Bolton.”

“You don’t know him,” Sansa argues.

“If I fall, don’t bring me back,” Jon warns.

“Thousands of men don’t need to die, only one of us,” he says to presumably Ramsay.

Who will survive this decisive fight? Who will emerge victorious after all the bloodshed? We’ll find out in a few days.

Game of Thrones season six airs every Sunday on HBO.
