A new trailer and poster for the upcoming season of Marco Polo have been released by Netflix.
According to a report by IGN, the second season of the period epic will once again focus on the Italian explorer’s adventures in 13th century China, particularly his involvement with the growing Mongol empire of Kublai Khan.
“The empire is growing,” a voice explains gravely in the trailer, “The larger it becomes, the larger a target.”
The explosive new trailer shows various intense scenes that prove that this season will be as epic, if not more so, than the first. The power struggles continue as Kublai Khan tries to expand and control his already massive empire. The more it grows, the more difficult it is to manage. His enemies continue to plot against him, determined to destroy him. But there are also tensions brewing in his own household.
“The Greatest Battle is the War from Within,” the trailer declares.
Bloody and fiery battle scenes are shown while “Devil, Devil” plays in the background (sung by Los Angeles indie singer Milck), and elaborate fight scenes also play out, showcasing the combat skills of several of the main characters. Allegiances will be tested and more complications will arise as Marco Polo witnesses the goings on in the great empire of the Khan.
The season 2 poster has Kublai Khan at its center while Marco Polo’s face occupies a less prominent part. The poster is predominantly in red and filled with intricate designs, putting emphasis on the fiery and dark tone the second season will have.
Marco Polo was created by John Fusco (Hidalgo) and Dan Minahan (Game of Thrones, Homeland). It was one of Netflix’s most expensive productions with the first season reportedly costing $90 million to produce, and which was filmed in Italy, Kazakhstan, and Malaysia.
Returning cast members include Lorenzo Richelmy as Marco Polo, Benedict Wong as Kublai Khan, Joan Chen as Empress Chabi, and many more. Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) will also be appearing as the Handmaiden.
All ten episodes of Marco Polo season 2 will be released by Netflix on July 1, 2016.
