Thor: Ragnarok villain revealed

Cate Blanchett the Hobbit BOTFAMarvel has announced that Cate Blanchett will be the Big Bad for the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok.

The Oscar-winning actress will be playing the role of Hela, “the mysterious and powerful new villain,” according to a report by IGN, confirming the rumors last year that Blanchett was involved in the film. The rest of the cast for the Thor sequel have also been announced.

Thor: Ragnarok will see the return of stars Chris Hemsworth as the titular character and Mark Ruffalo as his fellow Avenger, Bruce Banner a.k.a. the Incredible Hulk. Both characters were conspicuous by their absence in the recently released Captain America: Civil War, presumably because they were preoccupied with the events leading up to Thor: Ragnarok. Other retuning cast members include Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Idris Elba as Heimdall, and Anthony Hopkins as Odin.

Joining Blanchett as Hela are new cast members Jeff Goldblum who will be playing the “eccentric”  Grandmaster, an Elder of the Universe; Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, an Asgardian warrior who has also served as a hero on Earth on the Avengers and the Defenders; and Karl Urban as Skurge, also known as The Executioner, another potential enemy for Thor.

Cast members not returning for this third film include Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster and Stellan Skarsgard’s Erik Selvig.

Producer Kevin Feige had this to say about the casting news:

“The continuation of the epic Thor franchise will be powerful and unique, and with the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl, and Mark to the cast we have the makings of his most dangerous and heroic adventure yet. The sheer, raw talent each of these actors brings to the screen can’t be be quantified. Having any one of them join the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be an honor, and having all of them is incredible.”

Thor: Ragnarok will be directed by Taika Waititi and production is set to begin in Australia.
