ABC Cancels ‘Castle’ After 8 Seasons

It’s official: Castle will not be coming back for a ninth season after all. EW reports that ABC has canceled the long-running show, opting not to bring it back even after “cost-cutting” measures such as not renewing Stana Katic and Tamala Jones’ contracts.

For me, this news comes as a relief. I was very much not interested in a Beckettless ninth season – and the eighth season has overall lacked something, in my opinion. The show had a good long run, and it was time to say goodbye. The only lingering question is whether the showrunners will in fact choose the happier ending they filmed in case of cancellation, rather than the cliffhanger. Chances seem good that they will want to wrap it up well; as showrunner Alexi Hawley previously told EW:

If we hear that we’re not coming back, we have shot something that we can put at the end of the episode as a way to put a button on everything.

With rumors having spread that Beckett’s life will be in danger during the finale, this sounds like good news for her character as well.
