Live-action Disney classics on their way

The Jungle Book DisneyThe next few years will see regular outings of live-action adaptations of Disney animated classics.

After the commercial successes of Maleficent, Cinderella, and most recently, The Jungle Book, Disney is planning to adapt more of its memorable animated films into live-action versions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Some are already on their way while others are still in production. One thing is for sure: a new generation of kids will get to enjoy the Disney films that made their parents’ childhoods so magical.

Here is a brief rundown of the upcoming Disney live-action films:

  • Alice in Wonderland
    The sequel to 2010’s Tim Burton directed project, Alice Through the Looking Glass, will be released on May 27. Read more about it HERE, and check out the trailer below:

  • Pete’s Dragon
    Another adaptation of a beloved classic, starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford, will be released on August 12. Read more about it HERE, and check out the trailer below:

  • Beauty and the Beast
    Emma Watson stars as Belle, while Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) is the Beast and Luke Evans (The Hobbit) will play Gaston. The all-star cast also includes Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere and Ian McKellen as Cogsworth. It is due to be released on March 17, 2017.
  • 101 Dalmatians
    This will follow the footsteps of Maleficent, by focusing on the story of Cruella de Vil. Emma Stone is in talks to play the iconic villain. Read more about it HERE.

There are also sequels planned for previously successful outings. These will be:

  • Maleficent DisneyMaleficent 2
    After the success of the first Maleficent film, a second one is on its way, written by Linda Woolverton, who also penned Alice Through the Looking Glass. Angelina Jolie is rumored to be reprising her role as the fascinating title character.
  • Jungle Book 2
    The follow-up to Jon Favreau’s successful live-action adaptation of the 1957 film will delve deeper into Rudyard Kipling’s source material.

More projects are still on their way:

  • Peter Pan
    Pete’s Dragon director David Lowery will handle this other famous Pete.
  • Pinnochio
    Robert Downey Jr. is involved and Ron Howard is set to direct.
  • Dumbo
    After his success with Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton will try his hand at adapting this Disney classic.
  • The Sword in the Stone
    Someone familiar with similar topics, Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman, will be involved in this project.
    Mulan Disney
  • Mulan
    A Disney classic about a brave warrior who saves China. In 2015, Disney bought a script by writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek for a live-action film. We’re the Millers‘ Chris Bender and J.C. Spink are set to produce the film under their Benderspink banner.
  • Winnie the Pooh
    It’s still in early stages of development but a live-action version of this popular story will feature an adult Christopher Robin returning to the Hundred Acre Woods.

Several adaptations are also going to focus on minor characters from the classic stories:

  • Tinker Bell
    Finding Dory writer Victoria Strouse is involved in this project that will be an in-depth look into the character’s back story.
  • Rose Red
    Not a lot of people are familiar with Snow White’s sister, but a film is being planned with Rose Red going off on an adventure with Grumpy so that she can break her sister’s curse.
  • Genies
    This live-action prequel will serve as the origin story for Aladdin’s Genie (famously voiced by Robin Williams) and will also serve as a lead-in to a live-action Aladdin movie.
  • Cinderella 2015 DisneyPrince Charming
    While the princes in Disney films like Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Snow White have been no more than handsome props in the heroines’ stories, a film is being developed to explore the prince charming archetype.

These are just some of the live-action Disney projects that are currently in development.
