The formidable female characters take the spotlight in the newest posters for the upcoming season of Game of Thrones.

Entertainment Weekly has just released exclusive photos of their special collector’s edition covers for this year’s season of Game of Thrones. This time around, the focus is on six of the main female characters of the show, all key players in the unfolding saga of Westeros (and beyond.)

Two group photos have also been released. The first features the two rival queens in King’s Landing – Cersei Lannister  and Margaery Tyrell – as well as the great Khaleesi herself, Daenerys Targaryen.

The second group photo features the Stark sisters, Arya and Sansa, and the gallant knight, Brienne of Tarth.

These six ladies will be gracing the covers of EW‘s special edition. They all have different but major roles to play in Game of Thrones and the stakes are higher than ever for their characters. In the article by EW, the cast members had this to say about their characters:

Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister): “She really has nothing to lose and she has everything to gain from the horrible position she finds herself in.”

Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell): ‘We’ve seen Margaery in a lot of sticky situations, but she’s never been out of her depth before.”

Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen): “She’s learning the last lesson she needs to learn. There’s just few remnants of being a human being she’s shaking off.”

Maisie Williams (Arya Stark): “Last season people asked: ‘Is she dead?’ I’m all, ‘No, she’s blind.’ It’s too easy to kill her. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Game of Thrones it’s that death is the easy way out.”

Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark): “This is the season I’m most excited for. Sansa’s coming into her own and standing up for herself.”

Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth): “Brienne is so unique and unconventional and so strong, and I love the writing hasn’t allowed her to just rest there.”

All this shows that in the highly complex world of Game of Thrones, it’s the women who hold the true power.

HBO programming president, Michael Lombardo, told EW:

“The women are rocking this season – and I’m not just saying that because they’re on your cover. Daenerys always does, but also Brienne, Arya, Sansa, Cersei, Margaery, and other characters too, like Yara (Gemma Whelan). They power this season. It’s organic to the storytelling, yet a radical shift. It’s the women that are the hope that we’re watching as the chess pieces move this season, and it’s very exciting.”
