Shadowhunters, S1 E9- Rise Up

Yes, I can feel the chemistry and love. #Sarcasm Have this be on their wedding invitations.

Not even a full season into Shadowhunters, and its entire main cast is now made up of supernatural beings. The same can’t be said for a lot of other sci-fi/fantasy shows. I don’t know whether that’s a good thing or bad thing, to be honest. I was quite surprised. Simon took the whole “being undead” thing a lot better than I thought he would. He didn’t start that way, though.

Minutes into being a vampire, he spouts his hatred for what he is and flees the premises. But where is a new vamp even to go? Not the Hotel Dumort, that’s for sure. Clary’s confused on why Simon wasn’t upset with her. Raphael explains it’s because he blacked out moments after his transformation. He believes Raphael did this to him, not Clary. Go along with it, Clary. She doesn’t. Clary tracks him down and admits her involvement in his new unliving status. Naturally, he runs back home.

You can’t arrest that face! Just ask Izzy.

As does Jace, after leaving Clary on Simon duty. I’d like to add he left mere moments before the “what are we” talk with Clary was about to begin. A passionate kiss isn’t the answer, bud. Though it helps. At the Institute, Jace gets up to speed on the recent goings-on. The Forsaken Valentine’s created, Lydia Branwell’s running of the facility, and Alec’s engagement to her. No one is accepting of this, especially his parents. Who do you think had the worst reaction? Magnus’ was probably the one for us Malec fans, but I’ll get to that.

The Lightwoods’ (minus Alec’s) final straw with Lydia is sending Seelie Meliorn to be interrogated by the Silent Brothers. They could potentially kill him! But Lydia doesn’t want to do it, guys! She tells Alec the gory details on her ex’s death. She made the wrong choice when dealing with demons and after his death, vowed to always do the right thing. No matter the cost. I want to understand Lydia’s ways, but no. I appreciate the writers not fully making her a villain and giving her some depth, though. That’s Valentine’s job. Actually, Alec’s the one that’s the most in the wrong. He’s turning his back on his friends and family, all for a pretty girl that he’s not attracted to. Magnus knows you’ll regret your decision. To save Meliorn from the Silent Brothers and Alec from himself, the Shadowhunters team up with some unlikely friends: werewolves and vampires.

He’s not stealing it. He’s borrowing it.

That reminds me: Simon’s transformation. Clary tracks him down at his house; his poor Mom is worried sick about him. I would be too if I hadn’t heard from my kid in days. Unbeknownst to her, Simon almost makes her his midnight snack. Clary arrives just in time to say she needs his help to correct a missing identity case. I don’t know what hurts more: Clary’s eyes pleading for Simon to come with her or Simon’s Mom, who has no clue what’s going on. Simon heads with her to the Hotel Dumort, vowing to his Mom he’ll be back soon. It pains me to watch his Mom believe him. Towards the end of the episode, he claims Hotel Dumort as his new home. Visit your Mom, Simon!

Raphael secludes Clary and Simon away from the other vampires, which causes them to sit down and discuss the status of their feelings on the whole vampire thing. Simon’s angry with her, but he could never hate her. He’s her best friend; he can totally see why she did it.

Simon grows into his vampire ways by helping Raphael and his new vampire family in the battle against Alec. Just as Meliorn is about to enter the City of Bones, the werewolves, vampires, and Shadowhunters team up to rescue the Seelie. Jace and Magnus even had to steal Alec’s stele from their man.

The Lightwood siblings are on different sides? Well, this is a first.

The final battle is between Jace and Alec. Or I should say Alec and himself. That’s what Jace says this is really about anyway. He’s right.

The gang is able to save Meliorn, but we have a few more episodes for Alec to come around. As much as it pains me, I’m loving his story arc so far. How about you?

In return for his rescue, Meliorn is giving Clary a gift: to help her defeat and confront her father, Valentine. Insert the fun “alternative universe” episode! Clace is official, as is Sizzy! Plus Valentine with Jocelyn?

The latest Shadowhunters episode 1.10: “This World Inverted” airs tonight at 9/8c on Freeform. The trailer can be viewed below.

Okay, Izzy is the cutest little nerd. Who’s “nerd hot” now, Iz? Who’s curious on how this alternate universe portrays our favorite characters?
