In an exclusive issue of Entertainment Weekly, several intriguing images of Tim Burton’s adaptation of Ransom Riggs’ fantasy novel, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, are released. The story revolves around the adventures of 16-year-old Jacob Portman who somehow finds himself on a mysterious island full of peculiar orphans who are under the protection of the magical Miss Peregrine.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Eva Green 1Miss Peregrine is played by Eva Green (Penny Dreadful) and Jacob is played by Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game). Miss Peregrine is a shape-shifter called an ymbryne and she protects the children from horrible monsters called hollows. In the article by Entertainment Weekly, director Tim Burton describes her as a “scary Mary Poppins” who “can turn into a bird.”

Both the film and the novel were inspired by “otherworldly vintage photographs”, something Burton understands only too well. He said:

“They’re quite compelling. They remind me of old horror movies, or dreams.”

The film was shot in several locations around the world including Florida, Belgium, and Cornwall county. Burton said of this:

“It was nice to shoot on location, to be connected to a place and geography while having people actually floating, as opposed to doing it all digitally.”

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children groupThe story, with his elements of horror, fantasy, and the bizarre, seems familiar territory to Burton, known for films like Alice in Wonderland, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His films have also starred young people in decidedly strange circumstances.

Burton added:

“Weird kids: It’s something that I’ve dealt with and been interested in for a while. It’s a weird family.”

The rest of the cast includes Ella Purnell, Chris O’Dowd, Allison Janney, Terence Stamp, Kim Dickens, Rupert Everett, Judi Dench, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children opens on September 30, 2016.
