Magnus Bane, High Warlock of Brooklyn and Alec Lightwood’s future boy toy

It’s the moment I’m sure the majority of us have been waiting for: the real introduction of Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.) and the beginnings of his relationship with Alec. I know it’s hard, but try to contain your excitement, Malec fans.

Even Clary has Magnus on the brain, when this episode begins. Okay, so she has a nightmare of Magnus “stealing” her memories. Good thing she has Jace’s face to comfort her when she startles awake. Her mind (and heart) are playing tricks on her; it’s actually her lovable, forever best friend, Simon. Even though she recounts the dream to Simon, Jace is the real person who’ll know who Magnus actually is. To Simon’s disliking, Clary runs to (a shirtless) Jace to get some answers. Magnus is the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Jace mentions.

You know those people that never express their anger/negative feelings? They keep them bottled up inside until an explosion of rage rant occurs? That’s Simon. He can’t take being the “mundane prisoner” anymore and leaves, hoping Clary will join him. As much as I love seeing you tear Jace a new one, Clary has to stay for memory and motherless reasons. Simon takes the hint and heads home. It’s for the best, bud, you’re in for a vampy surprise anyway.

“Iz, with a body like yours, everything is your color.”

Besides being attractive beyond belief (#HodgeisHot), Hodge knows a thing or two about Magnus. He’s a 300 year old warlock, and the way to get his attention is through one hell of a party. It’s dress-up time for the grand party. That means skin tight clothing, Clary, not jeans and a t-shirt. Isabelle will supply you with such outfits. And for future reference, keep borrowing Izzy’s clothes.

The party’s location: Hardtail, not just a vampire dive bar Clary and Jace just happened to go to the other night. Tell me, Shadowhunters writers, when is mermaid night and can I come?

Clary runs up to Magnus the moment she spots him. She demands her memories back. Unfortunately, it isn’t that easy. 1) Magnus fed her memories to a memory demon, so Valentine could never lay a hand on them. 2) Magnus easily gets distracted by the presence of Alec, and it’s adorable! Alec slays a Circle Member in front of Magnus, which definitely gets the warlock’s attention. “Who are you?” he dreamily says about Alec. They introduce themselves and the ‘Malec’ fans flail. Magnus skedaddles into a portal to his loft before any of the others can join. Nothing that a parabatai bond between Jace and Alec can’t fix. Lingering eye contact later and the two have found Magnus’ exact whereabouts. I’d agree with you Clary: parabatai bonds are really intimate. “You don’t know the half of it,” Isabelle responds.

“You guys stare longingly at each other. I’ll be on the lookout for my bro’s man, Magnus.”

Once they’re at Magnus’ loft, the warlock explains in order to summon the memory demon, the gang needs to form a bond around an intricately drawn pentagram. Clary’s artistic skills come into use here. Magnus has never seen anyone draw as well as Michelangelo, who was great in bed by the way. Hear that Alec? Magnus leans over to catch Alec’s attention, all while Isabelle is beaming for her older brother’s shot at romance. No need to figure out who the captain of the ‘Malec’ ship is – Isabelle Lightwood has proudly taken that slot. Magnus instructs “pretty boy” to assemble his team to start the memory saving process. Jace, thinking it’s him (because of course he does), walks forward. “I’m not talking to you. I’m talking to you,” a point in the direction of Alec, leaves both Jace and Alec confused. I saw that hint of a smile, Alec, don’t try to pretend! Harry Shum Jr.’s scenes in this episode makes me wonder why he wasn’t given more to work with on Glee.

“Don’t get me wrong, Jace, you’re attractive. But you ain’t no Alec Lightwood.”

Summoning the demon isn’t the hard part (except for Clary, who has to succumb to a painful rune for it). It’s holding hands with each other and relinquishing the memory of your dearest love that is. Magnus warns them all that if their bond is broken and Clary has to kill the demon, her memories are gone forever. That’s totally not going to happen, right? Wrong. As the memory demon surfaces and each person gives away a memory of someone, things start to run smoothly. Clary’s obviously is her mother, Isabelle’s is Alec and Alec’s is…Jace. I think even for Alec himself, this is the first time his feelings for Jace are literally standing before him. He freaks and breaks the bond, not listening to Isabelle’s, “It’s okay!” Thus the memory demon has to be slain and Clary’s memories are gone forever. Jokes and my love for Magnus and Alec aside, the writers have set up a perfect storyline for Alec Lightwood. From brief moments of Alec’s fondness for Jace, to when Alec finally accepts his sexuality, this will be such great and powerful representation for LGBTQ+ youth. The Mortal Instruments film barely touched upon ‘Malec’ and Alec’s love for Jace. With Shadowhunters being a TV series, we’re able to get much more time and coverage on this important story. I’m looking forward to seeing Alec’s coming out story play out throughout this season and hopefully many more to come. Let’s not forget the crucial inclusion of Magnus Bane’s character itself. You don’t see bisexual representation on film/television often, let alone bisexual male representation. Let’s hope they can actually say the ‘b word’ though.

“Why does every shadowhunter insist on getting naked in front of me?”

With the memory demon vanquished, it looks like Clary has to start making new memories of the shadowhunters universe. Like for instance, Voldemort, I mean Valentine, contacting Clary via her necklace late that night. He wants the Mortal Cup. Don’t we all, dude?

Let’s see how Clary’s BFF, Simon, is doing after having left the Institute. Both his Mom and friend, Maureen, have been worried sick about him. He uses the “but I’m 18 ” excuse. Yes, you are a legally an adult, Simon, but you still have to check in with people. Maureen shortly leaves the Lewis household after embarrassing herself, telling Simon she’d like to date him. That takes guts, girl. I commend you! Simon is more interested in the blood she left after accidentally cutting herself on a broken picture frame. Vampire Simon is fast approaching! The episode ends with Clary trying to call Simon, but he’s too busy paying Camille a visit at the Hotel Dumort. Looks like someone wants a refill on that Bloody Mary.
