Details on The Walking Dead mid-season premiere

The Walking Dead Rick and CarlWhen The Walking Dead returns on Valentine’s Day, it will pick up right where it left off, with Rick and his friends surrounded by a horde of ravenous walkers.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, comics creator Robert Kirkman assures fans that we won’t have to wait for several episodes to learn the fate of the main characters (unlike the previous half season’s so-called “Glenn-gate“). Kirkman says:

“We pick up right in that moment. Alexandria is overrun. Rick and the kids are all covered in guts trying to get through the crowd. Everyone is where we last saw them, and things get worse from there.”

But despite the grim nature of the show, there will be some hopeful prospects for the future for the characters that do survive this latest massacre. Kirkman shares more details about the upcoming season arc:

“It comes back to those plans of rebuilding Alexandria. Assuming some people survive, and it’s a good bet that some do because they’ve already talked in the midseason finale that they’re not planning on leaving Alexandria. It’s a bump on the road, but there’s something special there, and they can turn this into an anchor that they can build upon. They actually have a chance of surviving long term and building a safe place, not going from safety to safety to safety the way they have for the life of the show. This isn’t the prison, and ‘Oh, we gotta move on from here and find another place.’ This is something different. And from there, there will be other things that expand their world in new and terrifying ways.”

Speaking of new and terrifying things, we know that Negan is about to make his first appearance on the show. And that spells trouble for everyone involved.

The second half of The Walking Dead season six airs February 14 on AMC.
