The Shannara Chronicles, S1 Ep3 – Fury

“The events leading up to this moment have been unfurling for centuries.”

The third episode of The Shannara Chronicles picks up where the season premiere left off, with our heroes being attacked by a vicious Fury. The Druid Allanon makes quick work of this demon so that they may continue on their journey back to Arborlon. But Allanon was wounded during the fight so Wil and Amberle have to bring him to his magical Druid healing table to recharge.

The Shannara Chronicles, S1 Ep3 - FuryThe two heroes venture off in search of something to heal Allanon’s wounds, not knowing that the Druid can heal himself, and then get captured by Eretria. She brings them back to a Rover camp where her “father” Cephalo tries to convince Wil to teach him how to use the Elfstones. Wil admits that he is ignorant of how these magical artifacts work but during a sudden attack by a demon, he instinctively uses the elfstones’ power to defeat it.

It’s a impressive moment and this already gives us a glimpse of the greatness Wil is destined for. Great power runs in his veins as he is later revealed to be the last in a noble bloodline, the last son of Shannara. And though he is initially reluctant to accept this heavy responsibility, he changes his mind and decides to stand by Amberle on her new quest.

Amberle and Eretria continue to act as rivals, with them both trying to beat each other in a fight. By the looks of it, any duel between them is evenly matched. And it would be better for these two to just work together against the growing forces of evil.

The Shannara Chronicles, S1 Ep3 - FuryAllanon, Amberle, and Wil travel through the Four Lands and witness the carnage left behind by the unleashed demons. The Shannara Chronicles doesn’t shy away from showing truly gruesome images of gore and violence and the special effects on the demons are truly revolting. It’s a stark contrast against the beautiful setting of the show with its lush sceneries and majestic mountains.

The three encounter an imprisoned boy named Bandon (apparently not a character from the books) who seems to possess magical powers. Allanon cannot read his mind and when he touches Amberle, he gets a vision of her bloodied body. No idea yet if Bandon is friend or foe but he certainly is an intriguing addition to the cast.

Amberle faces the Elven Council as a consequence of her abandoning her sacred duty to guard the Ellcrys. But being the last surviving member of the Chosen, she is tasked with bringing the seed of the Ellcrys to the Safehold where it will be immersed in the Bloodfire before it can be returned, so that the Ellcrys can be reborn. The fate of the Four Lands lies in Amberle’s hands.

The Shannara Chronicles, S1 Ep3 - FuryUnlike Wil, Amberle does not hesitate as she accepts this weighty responsibility with courage and grace. She agrees to enter into the sacred tree to be tested if she is worthy of this noble quest. If she is not deemed worthy, she will die. The episode ends with a cliffhanger of Amberle entering the Ellcrys.

After the lengthy set ups and world building of the first two episodes, The Shannara Chronicles has started settling into a more reasonable pace, allowing us to spend more time getting to know the characters and their motivations. The landscapes and scenery continue to be impressive and the performances are all solid. The pieces have been set in motion for a truly epic quest.
