Watch the first teaser for High Rise

High Rise Tom Hiddleston 1A mysterious advert for “Anthony Royal Architecture” shows scenes from the upcoming dystopian film, High Rise.

This adaptation of J. G. Ballard’s novel of the same name is set in a fictional futuristic version of 1975 London, inside an ultra-modern, luxury high rise building (hence the title.) Its numerous tenants form part of an isolated community, which though it seems ideal on the outside, hides more sinister truths within.

The short clip gives us a sense of this dark and intriguing story. It features a tall, shiny building, the High Rise of the title, while a cool voice over from Tom Hiddleston extols the virtues of this new, modern lifestyle.

“Ever wanted something more?” Hiddleston narrates, “Ever thought there could be a better way to live free from the shackles of the old, tired world?”

Initially, it plays out as a classy advert for luxury apartments. But in between images of the High Rise‘s extensive facilities and diverse residents are disturbing glimpses of decay and damage. Rotting fruit, malfunctioning elevators, flickering lights, suspicious knocking sounds, and blood in the swimming pool. Even tenants who seem contented with their accommodations begin to look uneasy. A creeping sense of dread pervades the later scenes. Clearly there is more to this building than meets the eye.

High Rise Tom Hiddleston 2Tom Hiddleston stars as Dr. Robert Laing, a new resident of the High Rise who soon discovers that not everything is as it seems in this idyllic community. Jeremy Irons plays the architect Anthony Royal. They are joined by a stellar cast including Sienna Miller, Elisabeth Moss, Luke Evans, James Purefoy, Reece Shearsmith, and Dan Skinner. The film is directed by Ben Wheatley.

High Rise had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and its European premiere at the 63rd San Sebastian Film Festival. It is set to be released on March 18, 2016.
