First Trailer for ‘Star Trek Beyond’ Released Online

Paramount Pictures has released the first official trailer for Star Trek Beyond, the follow-up to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness. While the main cast from the first two films has returned, J.J. Abrams has turned the director’s chair over to Justin Lin. Lin is best recognized for his work on four of the seven films in the Fast & Furious franchise, his last one being Fast & Furious 6. While those movies are all fun in their own way, the Star Trek franchise is an entirely different animal. Is Justin Lin a good fit for this series? Check out the trailer and find out.

The use of “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys definitely sets the tone for this new film as being something meant to be fun and exciting. It’s worth mentioning also that that very same track was used in Star Trek (2009) to introduce a young James T. Kirk. From the footage shown in this trailer we can decipher that the entire crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise has been taken captive on an alien world, and the Enterprise itself has seemingly been destroyed. Without a full crew and no ship, Captain Kirk and his immediate crew have to do whatever it takes to get everyone back.

Judging from the trailer, Star Trek Beyond looks like everything I would’ve wanted from Star Trek Into Darkness. While I thoroughly enjoyed Into Darkness, at the end of the day it was just an inferior version of the classic Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. What I originally wanted from a Star Trek sequel was a completely original spin and adventure that doesn’t heavily rely on nostalgia and references to old material. This is what Star Trek Beyond looks like. New aliens. New suits. An away mission on an unfamiliar alien world. This trailer has it all.

Now, do I think Justin Lin is a good choice for this movie? Yes, I do. Being both a Trekkie and a fan of the Fast & Furious franchise, I think Lin’s quality as a director will mesh well with this franchise. Based off his work on the Fast & Furious franchise we all know he can do action well, and he’s used to working with a large cast of main characters. Also, Simon Pegg, Scotty himself, has co-written the screenplay for Star Trek Beyond, so that’s definitely a plus.

Star Trek Beyond stars returning actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, and John Cho, and newcomers Idris Elba (Luther, Pacific Rim) and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service).
