The nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced December 9. The awards honor the best achievements in film and television performances for the year 2015.
Period films received much recognition this year, having nominations in multiple categories. Carol, the 1950s romance drama about the relationship of a young photographer with an older woman, scored two nominations: one for Cate Blanchett for Outstanding Actress and the other for Rooney Mara for Outstanding Supporting Actress. Trumbo, the biographical film about the Hollywood screenwriter who was blacklisted during the 50s, received nominations for Outstanding Ensemble Cast, Outstanding Actor (Bryan Cranston), and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Helen Mirren.) Mirren was also nominated for Outstanding Actress for Woman in Gold.
Mad Max: Fury Road received one nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.
On the television front, while the categories were mostly dominated by regular nominees such as House of Cards, Homeland, Mad Men, Louie, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, and Veep, there were some newcomers as well. These included the critically acclaimed Mr. Robot and Better Call Saul.
British period drama Downton Abbey also had a couple of nominations, one for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Drama and another for Outstanding Actress in a Drama (Maggie Smith)
Fantasy epic Game of Thrones got three nominations: Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series (Peter Dinklage), Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.
Netflix’s Marvel drama Daredevil and AMC’s The Walking Dead were also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.
The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be presented on January 30, 2016.
