Golden Globes 2016: The Nominees

The nominees for the 73rd Golden Globes were announced in Beverly Hills December 10 by Angela Bassett, America Ferrera, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Dennis Quaid.

Cate Blanchett CarolCarol, the 1950s drama about the relationship between two women, leads the pack with 5 nominations including Best Drama Film and Best Actress (Cate Blanchett.) Steve Jobs (the clue’s in the title), financial crisis film The Big Short, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s 1820’s survival drama, The Revenant, all have four nominations each. Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight also scored three nominations including a Best Supporting Actress nom for Jennifer Jason Leigh.

But this year’s list has included some popular genre films as well as conventional dramas and comedies. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi film, The Martian, is up for three Golden Globes including Best Comedy Film, Best Director, and Best Actor (Matt Damon.)

Mad Max Fury Road LogoMad Max: Fury Road was notably nominated for both Best Drama Film and Best Director (George Miller), some well-deserved recognition for one of the most popular and critically-acclaimed genre films of the year.

On the television front, Game of Thrones surprisingly only garnered one nomination this time, for Best Drama, despite doing exceedingly well at the Emmy’s earlier this year. Game of Thrones is the only “veteran” nominee in this category, as there are new contenders for Best Drama this year with Empire, Mr. Robot, Narcos, and Outlander up for the prize.

OutlanderThe Best Drama Actress category includes two ladies getting recognition from their excellent performances in genre shows: Caitriona Balfe (Outlander) and Eva Green (Penny Dreadful.) Tobias Menzies also got a nomination for Best Supporting Actor on Outlander.

Casual, Mozart in the Jungle, Orange is the New Black, Silicon Valley, Transparent, and Veep are all up for Best Comedy. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is once again nominated for her hilarious performance on the HBO comedy, Veep.

Among the networks, Netflix leads the race with an impressive 8 Golden Globe nominations, followed by HBO with seven, and Starz with six. As TVLine notes, a quarter of this year’s nominees are from shows produced by streaming services like Netflix (Orange is the New Black, House of Cards) and Amazon (Transparent).

Rick Gervais Golden GlobesThe 73rd Golden Globe Awards ceremony will be held on January 10, 2016 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The show will be hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais, making this his fourth time hosting this event.
