Doomsday Arrives In Latest ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Trailer

This past Monday, November 30, Warner Bros. released an official sneak peek of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice using FOX’s Gotham as its vessel. The clip, which is supposedly a nightmare sequence, was followed by the promise of a new trailer being released on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday, December 2. Now that day has come and the official trailer that debuted on Kimmel is online and ready to be viewed by all of you anxious DC fans. Check it out:

Tonally, this trailer is very different from the trailer that debuted at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Less focused on the dark, grim side of the Batman v Superman story, this trailer aims to show its fun side. Most of this fun is shown through dialogue from Jesse Eisnberg’s Lex Luthor as his eccentric side comes out during Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) and Bruce Wayne’s (Ben Affleck) first meeting, and him referring to Batman and Superman’s battle as “the greatest gladiator match in the history of the world.” So, it seems pretty clear Lex Luthor is somehow behind the fight between behemoths, but from the start there are some disagreements between Batman and Superman, as their alter egos challenge each other on how Metropolis’ Man of Steel’s methods differ from that of Gotham’s Dark Knight.

The trailer goes off the wall about midway through, giving us more pieces of the actual fight between Batman and Superman, but ends with a big surprise. There had been a lot of rumors floating around the internet in recent months that the iconic Superman villain, Doomsday, would make an appearance in Dawn of Justice. This latest trailer confirms that Domsday will make an appearance, and from the looks of it he will play a major role in the film’s climax. Unlike its comic book counterpart, this version of Doomsday is most likely created from the corpse of General Zod (Michael Shannon), and is not just a monster who crash lands from outer space.

“If I wanted it you’d be dead already,” is a line I definitely appreciate hearing Superman say to Batman. For years many have argued over who would win in a fight between Batman and Superman, and a lot have come to the conclusion that Superman could easily kill Batman with his laser vision or any one of his super powers. The truth is Superman would never go all the way against Batman and would always hold back, which is summed up perfectly in that line.

Other than seeing Jesse Eisenberg’s eccentric take on Lex Luthor and the big reveal of Doomsday, we also received an awesome moment with Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman as she deflects Doomsday’s laser beams with her shield, and looked so cool doing so. The final lines of Superman and Batman both questioning just where the heck she came from is also a humorous way to end it off.

Overall, I don’t think this trailer is enough to sway some of the Batman v Superman naysayers out there. While it was definitely fun and promises a lot of eye candy and action, some shots could be interpreted as goofy. Ben Affleck is definitely pulling off a much better Batman voice than Christian Bale did, though, and seeing the trinity stand side by side in the trailer’s final shot was a joy to see. The Doomsday reveal should have probably been saved for the movie, but I know something like that would never be able to be kept under wraps, especially if Doomsday turns out the be film’s main antagonist. While I wasn’t as blown away from this trailer as I would’ve liked to be, I’m still very excited for its release. Dare I say even more so for this than Civil War?
