Watch the opening credits of The Shannara Chronicles

The Shannara Chronicles titleMTV has recently released the opening title sequence for its upcoming epic fantasy/sci-fi series, The Shannara Chronicles, which is set to debut early next year.

The exciting 47-second clip features powerful imagery such as a world consumed by the flames of a nuclear holocaust and various bloodlines (gnomes, dwarves, trolls) descending from the wreckage. At the end of the clip, one can see the silhouette of the Elvin Princess, Amberle, as well as the majestic figure of the Ellcrys tree. And the effectively dark and intriguing music that plays during the sequence is Ruelle’s song “Until We Go Down.”

The Shannara Chronicles is based on the book series by Terry Brooks, particularly the first trilogy of Shannara novels: The Sword of Shannara, The Elfstones of Shannara, and The Wishsong of Shannara. The high fantasy series is set in the Four Lands, a realm that survives after the world was destroyed during a chemical and nuclear holocaust referred to as the Great Wars. Various races and mutations resulted from these events, allowing for a diverse and extensive cast of characters. The books are known for skillfully blending elements from both fantasy and science fiction in its complex stories. The first book was published in 1977 and the series continues to this day.

This opening sequence certainly gives us a sense of the tone and scope of the series, providing a brief but fascinating glimpse at a new and complex world. It is also an effective introduction to the series for viewers, whether they are fans of the book or are only going to discover the stories through the television adaptation.

The ten-episode first season of The Shannara Chronicles will star Ivana Baquero, Austin Butler, Poppy Drayton, Manu Bennett, Emilia Burns, Aaron Jakubenko, Daniel MacPherson, Marcus Vanco, Brooke Williams, and John Rhys-Davies.
