Luther returns for a two-part special this December

Luther S4 Idris ElbaIdris Elba reprises his award-winning role as tortured detective John Luther in an upcoming special.

According to the BBC, Luther will be returning for a fourth season comprising of a two-part serial to air next month featuring a thrilling new case. The award-winning detective drama first aired on BBC One in 2010, continuing for three series, the latest of which aired in 2013.

Idris Elba will be returning as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, a role for which the British star has won numerous Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, as well as a Golden Globe award in 2013. Michael Smiley and Dermot Crowley will also be reprising their roles as Benny Silver and DSU Martin Shenk, respectively. Sadly, Ruth Wilson will not be returning as the fascinating Alice Morgan.

Luther S4In the BBC press release, the star had this to say about Luther‘s return:

“I think Luther goes back just because he can’t stay away from it for too long. Ultimately, because he’s a protector, [he] just wants to be able to fix what he can see other people won’t be able to.”

He also added:

“I think there were bigger challenges when he lost his wife and his best friend… That was a huge pinnacle and something that took him a long time to get over. And in this [special] there is something similar that happens to him that is definitely traumatic.

Luther S4 Rose Leslie Darren BoydSome new additions to the cast include Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) and Darren Boyd (Fortitude), playing Detective Sergeant Emma Lane and Detective Chief Inspector Theo Bloom respectively. Laura Haddock (The Inbetweeners) and John Heffernan (Ripper Street) will also be joining the cast for the special.

The official synopsis reads:

“Luther’s back. Pitted against his most chilling adversary yet, haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution, he’s drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he’s ever been.”
