Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Supernatural, Grey’s Anatomy) has been cast as the notorious villain Negan, who is set to appear later in the sixth season of the AMC zombie drama, according to a report on TVLine. After making his first appearance towards the end of the current season of The Walking Dead, he is set to return possibly as a series regular for season 7.
Morgan is currently starring as an investigator on the award-winning drama The Good Wife, but his stint there will reportedly only be for the current season, preventing any schedule conflicts for his new, exciting role on The Walking Dead. The casting of Negan has been kept under wraps for months, as the showrunners refused to confirm that the character would be introduced this season. But now it’s official.
Fans of the comics are already familiar with Negan’s character, a charismatic but ruthless killer (of men and not just walkers), who will wreak havoc on the already chaotic lives of our protagonists. We’ll keep the spoilers to a minimum for non-comic readers, so suffice to say that among his many atrocities, Negan is also responsible for murdering one of the main characters.
But the show has often deviated from the plot of the comics, so it is possible that the character might take a different path. Other than Morgan’s casting, no further details have been revealed about how Negan will enter the picture in the midst of an already complicated plot.
The Walking Dead‘s sixth season airs every Sunday on AMC.
