Check out the first trailer for Alice Through the Looking Glass

Alice Through the Looking GlassYou’ve been gone too long, Alice,” says the deep voice of Alan Rickman’s caterpillar, “There are matters which might benefit from your attention. Friends cannot be neglected. Hurry.

And so begins the first trailer for Alice Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to Tim Burton’s 2010 live-action adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. This first glimpse at the film already assures us that it will be a more somber affair than the last (which was already quite dark).

The images are grim: Alice walking through darkness and approaching an ominous-looking structure, a massive clock striking among the shadows, characters looking distressed, and the Hatter staring forlornly at burning wreckage. Alice somehow finds her way back to Wonderland by walking through a looking glass, and she is determined to save the Hatter from some terrible fate.

Many familiar faces will be returning for this film including Mia Wasikowska’s Alice, the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), and the White Queen (Anne Hathaway). The trailer also gives us a first glimpse at Sacha Baron Cohen’s Time, who seems to be Alice’s adversary in this adventure. A short poem recited during the trailer gives us some idea of what the movie will be about:

When the day becomes the night and the sky becomes the sea,
When the clock strikes heavy and there’s no time for tea,
And in our darkest hour, before my final rhyme,
She will come back home to Wonderland
And turn back the hands of time.

Alice Through the Looking Glass is set to be released on May 27, 2016.
