iZombie, S2 E4- Even Cowgirls Get the Black and Blues

iZombie S2E4- "Even Cowgirls Get the Black and Blues"

Liv’s a little bit country in this episode, as she snacks on an aspiring country singer. She’s spouting out peculiar country sayings, and of course singing her heart out during an open mic. I’ll get to the latter in a bit.

Even Cowgirls Get the Black and Blues begins with a few tweens thinking they’re cool, roaming the streets with beers in their hands. They then find a gun thrown behind a bush and think it’d be even cooler to shoot a beer bottle with it. Kids, go home and play your brand new game system or something. Well, I guess if it wasn’t for these kids’ foolish decision to take the gun with them, the murder case of Lacy Cantrell (and a previous store robbing), wouldn’t be solved. So thanks, I guess?

Pey, you may be judging Liv on her roommate pickings, but I’m judging you on finding Blaine ‘interesting’.

After the kids’ horrible decisions and the opening credits (which continue to put a smile on my face each week), we are introduced once again to our (okay my) favorite character:
Peyton Charles, Utopium’s Worst Nightmare: After she attends a workout class, who’s there but her hopefully still best friend, Liv Moore. It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: how will Peyton react to seeing Liv? Surprisingly heartwarmingly well, it turns out. They share “I’ve missed you’s”, Liv brings her favorite juice in return for Pey acknowledging her birthday, and there is no tension in sight. Ever since the big “I’m a zombie” reveal between the two and Peyton’s disappearance, I’ve been worried how these two friends will react to one another after everything’s out in the open. But after the this episode, they have the most stable relationship out of the rest of the characters (okay, so Liv and Ravi are debatable in that sense). While away, Peyton gained some perspective on the situation. She understood why Liv kept her zombieness from her, even though she definitely wishes she was in the know sooner. But Peyton knows now and boy does she have questions, which I hope we see on screen at some point.

“Just wait until I find out Gilda is evil beyond belief. Then you can move back in, I promise.”

Producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright stated in several interviews that Peyton would be getting a more involved story-line this season. That certainly proved to be true, in Peyton’s involvement with the Utopium case. Unfortunately for her, no one seems to be coming forward with any information (even after she diminishes/eliminates their jail time). One surprising person that does provide information: Blaine. But, it being Blaine, it seems he’s using Peyton to gain more information about the Utopium himself. Later with Liv, Peyton proclaims she met someone interesting at work and I just wanted to yell to Liv, “It’s Blaine! Tell her all about his former zombie, but still evil-ish ways!” While a small scene, many people are already ‘shipping’ Peyton and Blaine. Personally, I’m most interested in seeing Peyton being further developed as a strong and independent female character, and think she should stay single for a bit. Speaking of Peyton’s love life, with her now bunking at Casa de Rajor, any Ravi/Peyton fan interested to see more interaction between the two?

Giddy up, little zombie

The Brain/Case of the Week: “Love and murder – country song staples,” Ravi mentions as Liv strums away on a guitar.  Our victim, Lacy Cantrell, waitress at country bar The Slow Roll, was found strangled in her room. Throughout the episode, we meet several characters with potential motives to harm the country music lover. Like an ex-con-ex-boyfriend with a shady past and anger issues to boot. Or Lacy’s manager who insists on sex in exchange for a paycheck advance. Neither end up being the culprit. Poor Lacy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The previously mentioned robber entered the first door he could find (Lacy’s) to hide away from the cops. Panicked to come across Lacy, he strangled her out of fear. The gun that was found by the meddling kids in the beginning of the episode was from the culprit’s previous robbing; his way of discarding the evidence. Rookie mistake, I guess.

“I need help.”

Major- The Zombie Slayer: Things continue to progressively derail for Major. First, he finds himself in bed with Gilda. Judging from his face, I’d say he forgot about their little hookup from episode prior. As he rushes home to try and pick up a car-less Ravi, who would he run into but the last person he wants to see right now: Liv. He still insists on space, but Liv just wants the two to confront their issues with one another. All of this will come to a head as the episode concludes, which I will mention in a moment.

When iZombie first aired, I wasn’t a huge Major fan. I found his character to be the ‘perfect boyfriend’ trope and didn’t find him all that appealing. Then Major discovered the zombie side to Seattle and things took an interesting turn. As he slayed all the zombies in the Meat Cute restaurant, I rooted for the guy. However, now with his current addiction to Utopium, on top of his blackmail deal with Max Rager, my stance on him has changed. I’m still hoping for him to succeed, and to get away from Vaughn Du Clark’s hold on him. But his rock bottom Utopium drug adventure is not exactly making it easy. Liv tries to confront him, but he insists on needing space from her still. The perfect parallel to showing just how much this drug has taken him over, when he tries to score more of it, the dealer ends up being one of his former kids he was counseling. He used to try to keep those kids off the streets, and look at where he is now. “I need help,” he says to Liv, as he arrives on her doorstep (complete with sad puppy dog eyes). What starts as a comforting hug, leads to a comforting make-out session? This will either complicate or mend their relationship.

What did everyone think of iZombie‘s 2.04: Even Cowgirls Get the Black and Blues?
With Rose McIver’s singing abilities now present (and beautiful), I need some Livton karaoke scenes immediately! Or a show choir brain perhaps?

Liv’s next brain just wants everyone to get their heads in the game. For the love of basketball!
