Sherlock Christmas Special to be shown in cinemas worldwide

Sherlock Christmas SpecialThe upcoming Sherlock Christmas Special – set in the Victorian period – will be heading to the big screen in cinemas all around the world, including China, according to a report by the Radio Times.

BBC Worldwide has recently announced that the airing of the highly-anticipated 90-minute special will be part of a ‘global cinema event.’ The full list of participating countries has not yet been released, but it has been mentioned that China will notably be among them.

Sherlock has gained a massive following in the country since the series first aired in 2010, garnering more than 98 million views on Youku, the country’s online TV platform, and with more people ‘bypassing internet restrictions by viewing it on the BBC’s iPlayer.’

The Sherlock special stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, respectively, and is completely set in London 1895. The plot has been a very well-guarded secret and no details have been revealed yet on how the show, which is usually set in modern-day London, somehow goes back in time.

It will also feature series regulars Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs, Louise Brealey, and Amanda Abbington. The special was written by series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and will be directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who, Line of Duty.)

Sherlock‘s Victorian-era adventure will be hitting both the big and small screens this Christmas.
