While the last LEGO/Marvel game, entitled LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, featured a fun, original story with a hefty selection of Marvel characters to choose from, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers will primarily focus on the stories told in the Marvel Studios films. The game will feature content from The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, and Iron Man 3. That being said, the creators promise that this new addition to the LEGO game franchise will include additional content inspired by the comics and Marvel’s TV universe. Arthur Parsons describes the game as “a celebration of everything.”

The game will also feature over 100 new Marvel characters that were not included in the last game. During the panel, a few clips shown revealed the inclusion of the Iron Man nemesis Fin Fang Foom, the classic Jack Kirby creations Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur, and Agent Peggy Carter. While a lot of dialogue will be ripped straight from the movies, much like LEGO Lord of the Rings, Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell has lent her voice to the game, providing some original dialogue for special missions.

Other characters mentioned by the creators as being confirmed playable characters are the current Ms. Marvel, the current Thor, America Chavez of the Young Avengers, Jessica Jones, and even the little boy from Iron Man 3 equipped with his own potato gun. Unfortunately, when asked by a fan if Spider-Gwen would make an appearance in the game, the creators responded that only Marvel characters with ties to The Avengers would be included. Maybe we can hope for some DLC later down the line. When asked if Howard the Duck would make an appearance, Mike Jones responded with “no comment”.

In order to condense 6 films into one fun, playable LEGO game, the creators state that fans will be able to play the fun parts of the movies while some of the story will be filled in with comic book-like transitions. This was demonstrated when a clip was shown describing certain events from Iron Man 3.

Additionally, the creators revealed a short clip of the type of gameplay available in LEGO Marvel’s Avengers. Fans should be happy to find out not much has changed on this front, as LEGO Marvel’s Avengers will feature the same fun, tried-and-true gameplay seen in recent LEGO releases. A clip featuring Captain America and Black Widow implied that characters will be able to accomplish special moves cooperatively, as we saw a glimpse of Black Widow bouncing up into the air via Captain America’s shield, much like she did in The Avengers.

Overall, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers looks very promising and will certainly please fans of the LEGO gaming franchise. The crowd at New York Comic Con sure seemed to love what they saw.
