River Song to appear in Doctor Who Christmas Special

River SongAlex Kingston will reprise her role as the time-traveling professor in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, Variety reports.

Professor River Song shares a complicated history with the Doctor since they always meet at different points in each other’s timeline. A quick recap: River is the daughter of former companions Amy and Rory Pond and having been conceived in the TARDIS, has certain Time Lord qualities. She was kidnapped as a child and conditioned to kill the Doctor but after a series of more complicated events, she ends up falling in love with him and becoming his wife.

In the 15 episodes of Doctor Who where River has appeared, she has encountered both the Tenth (David Tennant) and Eleventh (Matt Smith) incarnations of the Doctor. The new special will be her first meeting with Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor.

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special,” Kingston said in Variety. “Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humor and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read-through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”

Showrunner Steven Moffat also teased this about River’s involvement in the story:

“The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time…”

Doctor Who‘s ninth season premieres on September 19 on BBC America.
