Tony Todd Cast as the Voice of Zoom in ‘The Flash’

Tony Todd Zoom

Tony Todd will voice Zoom

Not to be confused with Professor Zoom, a.k.a. The Reverse-Flash, Zoom is another villainous yellow-suited speedster with a vendetta against The Flash. Zoom will serve as the main antagonist of The Flash‘s second season, and while the person behind the mask intends to be kept a mystery, the character will be voiced by actor Tony Todd. Here’s what executive producer Andrew Kreisberg had to say about this latest casting development:

Last year, with the Reverse-Flash, we just modulated Tom Cavanagh’s voice, and this year we wanted to do something a little bit different. Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader — this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd.

Tony Todd has appeared in nearly 200 projects since 1986, a large portion of those being horror films. Some notable works include Candyman, Night of the Living Dead (1990), the Final Destination franchise, and Chuck. Todd is also no stranger to voicing DC Comics characters, having done the voice of Darkseid in the recently released LEGO DC Heroes: Justice League – Attack of the Legion of Doom! and the hero Icon in Cartoon Network’s short-lived series Young Justice.

Zoom will make his first appearance in the second episode of season two entitled “Flash of Two Worlds”, and much like his predecessor “Zoom doesn’t care who gets hurt or what gets destroyed in the service of him getting his goal”, according to Andrew Kreisberg. In an interview with, Kriesberg also goes on to imply that the secret identity of Zoom may not be what DC Comics readers will expect, stating the following:

We have to service the entire audience, both the fans and the non-fans, and I think we’ve shown up until this point a great deal of respect and reverence for the source material, so that we always feel like we’re fulfilling the comic book fans’ expectations while also not spoon-feeding them stuff directly from the comics. So the story of Zoom and who and what he is… hopefully comic book fans will be happy because we’ve come up with a clever way to spin the tale, but that also makes it exciting for the people who aren’t as familiar with the comics and are just enjoying the show on its own terms.

Season two of The Flash is set to premiere Tuesday, October 6 at 8/7c on The CW. Do you think Tony Todd is a strong fit for the voice of Zoom? Feel free to let us know your thoughts on this latest casting development in the comments.
