Robbie Amell joins the X-Files revival as an FBI Agent. He might want to invest in sensible shoes and alien repellant.
The X-Files mini-series keeps piling on the guest stars to join David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, and the two latest might just be a backdoor pilot all on their own. Lauren Ambrose and Robbie Amell have been cast as Agents Miller and Einstein – and I’m willing to bet one of them is skeptical and one of them is not.
Could this mean Fox is hoping to relaunch the series with new leads? Lay the groundwork with the beloved Mulder and Scully then leave the scut work of aliens and conspiracy theories to new blood. One assumes this all hinges on ratings and network expectations being met – in which case, Ambrose and Amell might have an uphill battle to climb.
The X-Files was a revelation way back when – a successful genre show that won three Emmys (nominated for 21 total) on a network without much respect at the time. Right now, genre television is having a bit of a renaissance – can the mother ship compete?
The six part series is headed by original creator Chris Carter, and includes guest stars Joel McHale, Rhys Darby, Kumail Nanjiani, and Annet Mahendru. Mitch Pileggi returns as Walter Skinner and William B. Davis as what we assume is the ghost of the Cigarette Smoking Man.
The X-Files hits the small screen with a two-night premiere starting Sunday, Jan. 24 at 10 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. PT and continuing Monday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. in its normal time slot.
