The Walking Dead and spinoff may share timelines

The Walking Dead Season 6The Walking Dead universe keeps getting richer and richer, with the sixth season of the main show coming up, as well as the premiere of Fear the Walking Dead. We are getting more and more information about the upcoming story lines and how much these shows will be sharing (and not just the threat of death by zombie attack.)

Earlier this week, Entertainment Weekly released the first few images for the sixth season, including main characters Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Glenn (Steven Yeun), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), and Daryl (Norman Reedus). All characters look even grimmer than usual, with Glenn and Maggie having their weapons drawn, but we don’t know yet who or what they are aiming at.

In an interview with EW, showrunner Scott M. Gimple talks about what we may expect for the next season and the addition of some more elements from the comics. Tensions were high in Alexandria when the season ended, and Rick and his group will have to try and define how they fit in in the community. More of the comic backstory will also be revealed.

Gimple concludes:

“I’ll say this: I think there’s a really cool aspect to the first half of the season that serves almost as a prequel to some direct comic stuff in the second half of the season. I think there’s a way that Robert did some of the story that we’re reaching that had a real past to it, where people are referring to some things in the past in the comic. And we’re able to portray some of that backstory in some ways that you didn’t get to see in the comic.”

As for the spin-off show – while Fear the Walking Dead is set earlier on during the zombie outbreak, it is not considered a prequel. But though the story will move at a different pace and take place in a very different setting, there may be moments when its timeline may match up with that of the main show.

In an EW report, executive producer Robert Kirkman discusses the possibilities:

“I will say that I don’t consider this show to be a prequel to The Walking Dead, because there will be a point where a certain episode of this show will line up with season 2 of The Walking Dead, and a certain episode of this show will line up with season 3 of The Walking Dead. So we will be progressing through time to the point that we do pass the initial days of the outbreak. But how fast it is that we get there? That’s just going to have to remain a mystery.”

We’ll have to wait and see how the stories intersect but for now, don’t miss the season 6 trailer AMC will unveil at Comic Con today (July 10)!
